MAPPING PARADISO for GIRLESQUE on ACID
Paradiso is a location in Amsterdam where a church has been converted to a music hall.
The main hall is mainly used for concerts and disco events and the building will be hosting this year’s Amsterdam Gay Pride with Girlesque on acid hosted by Bianca Moerel on the 5th of August.
We have been invited to provide a mapping projection on the church’s backwall and we are intrigued by it’s realization.
First of all we prepared all of the equipment we would need. Cameras with charged batteries and memory cards, a tripod, memory card reader and a laptop.
When we arrived at the location we first checked the projector’s lens in order to calibrate our camera lens to the projector lens. We used the widest angle lens and set the zoom at it’s widest opening to cover most of the background wall surface.
We took some pictures positioning the camera in front of the projector’s lens. Once we had a few pictures taken, we connected our laptop to the projector to see if they were matching with the backwall’s outlines. The picture had to fit the output resolution of the projector. In our case it was 1024 x 768.
Next step was to project our pictures and try to match the backside wall surface as best as possible. It did not work out. The image is flat and the backside wall is curved. Therefore we used a test screen pattern image and we took a picture to have it as a guide for our matching purposes. And later on for our masks. We took a picture of the projection.
